Improve quadcopter landing skills with an Arduino-powered helipad

Quadcopters are a lot of fun, however the challenge of flight is exceeded by the ability to make a sound and damage-free landing. Taking this into account, Martin Engstrom has created an intelligent landing pad that is fun but also helps improve your landing skills.

By using an ultrasonic distance sensor the helipad detects the presence of a quadcopter, and then starts the customisable process of offering landing permission after a set period of time, and displaying the progress and sequence of events using LED strips and an LCD. It can even time "laps" of flight to introduce even greater challenges. A quick demonstration is shown in the following video:
